The Saskatchewan Household Hazardous Waste Product Stewardship Program will launch on April 1, 2021. Pursuant to the Household Hazardous Waste Products Stewardship Regulations enacted in June 2019, “first sellers” of the designated products must join an approved program. The SK Ministry of Environment approved Product Care’s SK HHW program plan on June 23, 2020.
Product Care members that sell designated household hazardous products in or into Saskatchewan are advised to register with the Product Care SK HHW program prior to April 1, 2021 and prepare to report sales and remit EHFs to Product Care for the designated SK HHW products after that date, in order to be in compliance with the regulation. A notice detailing the registration process will be distributed in January 2021.
The designated product categories are the same as the Manitoba HHW stewardship program, with some exceptions. The SK HHW program does not include lamps, but does include some additional pesticides, specifically insect repellents, pet products, sanitizers and disinfectants. For a detailed list of designated products, see the Appendix to the Regulation.
Environmental Handling Fees
Effective April 1, 2021, first sellers of designated HHW products in Saskatchewan must report quantities sold and remit the applicable EHFs to Product Care. EHFs for designated SK HHW products are listed below.
Note the fee rates have been initially set to be the same as for the MB HHW program, but are subject to change.
