New ON Regulations for Waste Electronics and Batteries – Includes Lighting Products

Dear Product Care Members,

The draft regulations for waste electronics and batteries in Ontario have just been released for consultation.

Visit: https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-0048 for more information about the regulations and the consultation process and see the draft regulation here.

As well as the existing electronics products currently being managed in Ontario by product stewardship programs, there are many new categories being designated including “lighting” which looks very similar to the BC definition which applies to the Product Care BC program:

  • means lighting equipment, fixtures, bulbs and other products for the purposes of spreading or controlling light and includes but is not limited to the examples set out in section 3 of Schedule 1; […….]
    • Lighting includes:
      • Light bulbs, including incandescent, fluorescent, halogen and LED.
      • Light fixtures, including ceiling-mounted, floor-standing and table-top lamps.
      • Light strings, spotlights and flashlights

We will consult with the industry to provide more information and to discuss the potential role of Product Care, and synergies with our existing Ontario programs.

The Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks will host webinar sessions on May 22 and May 28 from 1 – 3 p.m. to consult on the proposed regulations. To participate email Tammy.Nguyen2@ontario.ca or call 416-327-6380 by Friday May 17, 2019. Further meeting details will be provided on confirmation.
