Update on Fees for Manitoba Physically Hazardous Products

Dear Product Care Recycling Members,

We value your feedback and are committed to supporting your business needs. Following discussions with you – our members – about the announced fee adjustments for Physically Hazardous Products in Manitoba, we are revising the proposed fees, reflecting your input.

As previously communicated, the fee notice sent on February 1, 2024, outlined an increase in fees for Physically Hazardous Products in Manitoba from $0.50 to $2, effective April 1, 2024. This decision was influenced by multiple factors including inflation, significant increases in operational costs, and decreasing sales revenue, with no fee adjustments since the program’s inception in 2012.

Product Care has developed a new graduated fee increase for this product category. This new fee increase model will help sustain the program while addressing the concerns and needs of our members.

The following fee schedule will apply to Physically Hazardous Products sold in Manitoba:

  • The current rate of $0.50 will remain unchanged until June 30, 2024.
  • Effective July 1, 2024, the fee will increase to $1.00.
  • On April 1, 2025, the fee will increase to $1.50.

Note: These adjustments apply specifically to Physically Hazardous Products, and all other rate changes for other product categories outlined in the February notice will proceed as initially proposed, effective April 1, 2024.

Product Care will continue to undertake a rigorous assessment to determine if we can limit the fees from increasing further in the near term, beyond what is outlined above. We will also reevaluate our fee change process to include engagement with our valued members going forward.

We appreciate your ongoing engagement and support as we address current economic pressures together.

Sincerely,

Brian Bastien
