Extended Producer Responsibility in the Yukon: Summary of Consultation Feedback

Dear Product Care Member,

As part of Our Clean Future: A Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and a green economy, the Government of Yukon has pledged to create an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation by 2025. The Government of Yukon has released a report summarizing the public’s response to Extended Producer Responsibility in the Yukon.

Engagement of Extended Producer Responsibility

Stakeholder meetings, public information sessions, a public survey, and written submissions in response to a discussion paper were all part of the engagement efforts. Consultation took place between November 1, 2022, and February 17, 2023.

The three priority categories of materials to be managed under EPR are:

  • printed paper and packaging products (PPP), such as blue box type items (excluding beverage containers)
  • household hazardous waste (HHW), including waste paints, fuels and solvents; and
  • automotive wastes, such as waste oil, waste antifreeze and their containers.

You can review the complete report or a condensed executive summary, both of which can be accessed here. Members are encouraged to review this information as they may become an obligated producer under the proposed regulation or otherwise have an interest in this issue.

The new regulation is expected to be in place by the end of 2023. Subsequently, a planning and consultation phase will ensue, involving discussions between producers and local businesses. Stewardship programs are expected to be in place by the end of 2025.

If you have any questions, you can reach Natalia Baranova at Natalia.Baranova@yukon.ca or 867-667-5076.

Thank you.
