While BC’s Victoria Day long weekend is an opportunity for people to get out of town or just enjoy a relaxing few days off, Matt and I had the pleasure of attending one of BC’s best events: the Cloverdale Rodeo! In its 70th year, this iconic Surrey event did not disappoint. For four days it was all cowboy hats, riding boots, country tunes, and some of the best barbeque brisket one can find.
This weekend we were able to put on a different (cowboy?) hat, representing the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute of Canada (OPEIC) to talk about how easy it is to recycle outdoor power equipment, such as lawnmowers, weedwackers, and pressure washers at local recycling depots such as Surrey’s Regional Recycling and ABC Recycling Surrey. For an event which had over 100,000 attendees in the weekend alone, there was certainly never a dull moment!
Asking folks to “mowsey” on over to our tent for a recycling rodeo, we got everyone to help us recycle materials that we normally don’t think about in our everyday recycling routine. With a choice between a trash can, a “Take Me to the Depot” bin, or recycling blue bin, kids and adults alike helped us take our mini lawn mower, toaster, chainsaw, paint can, smoke alarm, and other various recyclables to the depot by placing items into the correct bins. Both Matt and I were extremely impressed by everyone’s quick thinking about which materials can go to nearby recycling depots and not just into your blue bin at home. We also made sure to reward our winners with some OPEIC frisbees and entries into our $100 visa card prize draw.
Overall, we had the best time this weekend “getting back to country” and reconnecting with our inner cowboy and cowgirl. With the perfect location between the food trucks and Stetson Bowl rodeo, as well as being joined by our fellow ambassador at ElectroRecycle, Hannah, to talk about small appliance and power tool recycling, we could not help but be taken by the rodeo spirit. We even put this to the test by getting Matt to try the mechanical bull ride. While he is never thrown by recycling questions, the bull riding might take some more practice.
